About

I am an Industrial Engineering undergraduate at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) with a specialized focus on Human Factors, Aerospace Research, and Project Management. With over 3 years of professional experience across NASA, Amgen, and Claro PR, I specialize in optimizing the interface between humans and complex technical systems to drive safety, efficiency, and resilience.

Aerospace & Human Systems Integration (HSI)
My work within the NASA ecosystem focused on high-stakes systems design and data transformation:

  • NASA Glenn Research Center: Accelerated digital transformation by developing a Python/Google Cloud data portfolio application for the AETC.

  • NASA Kennedy Space Center: Coordinated HSI programs for the EGS division and engineered VBA automation tools to streamline document-search workflows.

  • NASA RASC-AL: Led the Human Integration Design for a First-Place winning lunar rover concept, utilizing NASA-STD-3001 and anthropometric data to optimize astronaut performance.

Pharmaceutical & Industrial Operations

  • Amgen: Applied Lean methodologies to the AML6 Media Prep division, optimizing workflows and data management in a high-compliance biotech environment.

  • Claro Puerto Rico: Re-engineered evacuation routes using AutoCAD for OSHA compliance and performed ergonomic risk assessments to enhance workplace safety.

Strategic Leadership & Resilience

  • Advocacy: Elected Student Representative on the UPRM Administrative Board, representing the interests of 12,000+ peers in institutional decision-making.

  • Resilience: Conducted field research and needs assessments for the IUDC to foster long-term recovery in disaster-impacted communities post-Hurricane María.

  • Mentorship: Supported STEM retention as an NSF PEARLS Scholar and Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) mentor.

Technical Toolkit:

  • Methodologies: Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt), Project Management, Human-Centered Design (HCD), OSHA Compliance.

  • Software: Python, SQL, VBA, AutoCAD, Smartsheet, Tableau, MATLAB.

I am a certified Lifeguard (Red Cross) and a dedicated problem-solver committed to leveraging engineering to create human-centered solutions in the aerospace, medical, and disaster-management sectors.

Let’s connect to discuss the future of Human-Systems Integration.

"Lemuel was an outstanding student at CROEM. You have great gifts and talents. He is a leader, honest and with beautiful qualities that make him a very special being." -Carmen Magaly (high-school academic counselor)

"Lemuel is an outstanding Professional. He Is passionate about his work and can see the applications towards any field of study. His holistic tendencies help him to develop and work in groundbreaking projects. As an individual, he is respectful, understanding, and proactive. It has been a pleasure to see him grow from High School up until University in all of his projects as well as working with him." -Fabian Segarra (high-school & college colleague)

"Lemuel is an excellent leader and innovator. Working with Lemuel was an overall great experience. He communicates his ideas in an orderly fashion and is always open to suggestions. Having a proactive team member like him will be of benefit to any organization seeking an organized and well structured individual with great morals and respect for others." -Gustavo Maldonado (former director of operations at bioX)

"Lemuel was a standout member of the UPR-Mayaguez MEDLIFE Chapter's Service Learning Trip to Tena, Ecuador in December 2019. During this trip, Lemuel improved upon his already excellent international relations skills by communicating positively with patients - many of whom have received little to no medical care before. Using his strong interpersonal skills, he was able to make patients feel comfortable and well taken care of. Lemuel also showed an impressive determination to learn about the communities that MEDLIFE works with. His passion for education was emulated by his interest in rural medicine, as well as the socioeconomic history of Ecuador and how that related to patients' health. Lemuel also gained valuable tactical skills that are applicable to different medically related fields, such as taking patients' temperatures, height, weight, blood pressure, and body mass index. Furthermore, he gained experience shadowing MEDLIFE's local doctors who were able to explain the various region-specific health problems faced by the communities that MEDLIFE visited. Lemuel's desire to learn and help those in need was extremely apparent during his time volunteering with MEDLIFE, and we appreciate his dedication to the MEDLIFE Movement."

-Emma Blystone (MEDLIFE Movement international associate)

"Lemuel R. Ríos Santiago was a student at CROEM. This school is a boarding school that selects the best performance of students in Science and Math. He is an excellent, responsible, motivated person and also had high potential as a student in my Physics, Research, and Technology Principles. He is always in the best 10% of my classes doing all extra tasks when necessary, and still having high performance, going over any obstacle to answering any difficult problem given. I am sure he will complete any responsibility in the best skillful way he can. Lemuel is acutely aware of the opportunity he has, and each day takes any occasion as a unique possibility to grow. He is looking for any event of intellectual and social development. He was involved in community projects like ADRA PR in which he was giving food, clothes, and help for people in need. Also, he worked in the Albergue Villa Michelle, taking care of dogs and cats, while being adopted. He won outstanding participation and second place in the movie festival competition organized by the Department of Education. He won second place in the NASA MgUE SLED competition. He did a research project in which he worked with the vulnerability of people near flood areas in Rincón. He won semifinalists in the JSHS symposium held by Army, Airforce, and Navy. His work will assist people in looking for getting help when needed. He is a member of the following students' organizations: In SCI (society of Engineering Clubs) (vocal), FFA, Math Club, and football team (captain). As part of his work in SCI, Lemuel is proposing NASA CELERE in which he is designing an experiment to measure the capillary effect of liquids while in microgravity. He is involved very actively in all organizations as well in science, developing new ideas for astronauts and how the body, in this case, the blood system, will function in space thru capillary. His goal is to continue studying at University planning to finish his bachelor's degree and may proceed further. In class Lemuel had demonstrated to have the capacity to perform his work in the best skillful way. His leadership and exemplary behavior in the class known between his peers, which accepts him very well. He is one of the positive leaders that our future community will need. He also makes the right decisions when necessary, either in class, extracurricular activities, or outside of class. He has a high self-concept because he thinks and evaluates positively about himself. He is aware of one and has a high concept of himself. He has a high self-awareness demonstrated by the capacity for introspection and the ability to reconcile oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. His kindness, amiability, and good manners characterize his behavior in class and surroundings. He was also in the honors roll of the school. The best reason for me to recommend is his intelligence, ethics, participation, and excellent standard test performance."

-Elba Sepulveda (high-school Physics teacher & research mentor)

"Lemuel is a completely hardworking and innovative leader. The versatility and quality of his academic and professional work is really surprising, he has been a great contribution to bioX." -Carlos Amaury (former president at bioX)
